The best kind of parent you can be is to lead by example. I know this is absolutely true as I can attest to it. Last night I received a heartfelt letter from Ken’s growing adult nephew telling me how thankful he was that I came into his life when he was just 5 years old. He realized how much of an impact I’ve made in his life even though I was only in my early 20’s. Although he wasn’t my child, but I treated him as my own and never gave up on him. I seemed to have more patience in my 20’s than as I get older with my own kids. This is something I’m trying to work on among other things.
I strive to be the best example as a parent but sometimes it’s so hard. We all have our own flaws and insecurities that it may mirror. Couple that with exhaustion and lack of sleep. Some days I need to be reminded and work on being the best role models for my kids. Last night I got the biggest reminder, sense of proud aunt, honoured and grateful his emotions were shared with me.
What would you tell your younger self about parenting?
